“Life’s Hard in Prison”

Kiara
De La Salle Middle School at St. Matthews

(Dedicated to my uncle, James Bailey)

It’s hard

To let others be in charge.

To always be told to get up,

Not even enough time to shoot a layup.

You sit in your cell

Thinking, Man, this is like Hell,

But you caused it yourself.

Don’t criticize a brother,

            Just love one another.

Be cool, calm, collected

            Or you will be rejected.

Keep your space

So haters won’t get in your face.

Don’t make a case

By killing the spirit of a brother

Who may or may not have your skin color.

                        Just love one another.
